Samsung had announced its latest flagship phone, Galaxy S4, at a spectacular event in New York City, and we’ll tell you everything there is to know about the device, from specifications to new software features to launch details and pricing. The Galaxy S4 has a bigger display and unconventional features such as gesture controls but what’s important is that the Galaxy S4 is here, and ready to launch in 155 countries at the end of April.
Samsung focused more on the new software features that will be found on top of the Google’s Jelly Bean although Galaxy S4 has some interesting hardware under the hood. Let’s break down the specifications of the newest Samsung flagship.
Exynos 5 Octa 5410 or Snapdragon 600 (market dependent)
As the rumors suggested, the US version will be using Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon 600 whilst the rest of the world will be using Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa (5410).
In the US Snapdragon 600 will be employed thanks to the widespread LTE coverage there and the embedded nature of the LTE chip. The Snapdragon 600 will be running at a smooth 1.9Ghz, whilst the Exynos 5410 will be clocked a tiny bit slower at 1.6Ghz.
The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa is a chip that was announced at CES 2013 on January 10 2013. The Exynos 5 Octa is built on Samsung’s 28nm process (5000X thinner than a human hair) features four ARM Cortex A15 cores (1.6GHz) and four Cortex A7 cores (1.2GHz). Technically, the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa features 8 cores as its name indicates. However, only four cores can be active at any given time.
- 4X ARM Cortex A15 cores at 1.6GHz
- 4X ARM Cortez A7 cores at 1.2GHz
- 28nm Samsung manufacturing process
- Graphics: PowerVR SGX-544MP3 at 533MHz

Display – 4.99-inch Super AMOLED HD
Following many 2013 flagships, the Galaxy S4 has a 1080p (1920×1080) resolution on a Super AMOLED display. The screen is bright, the colors look super-saturated and the viewing angles are stellar. The display as expected, is covered with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3, and it’s known as a “full HD super AMOLED” screen with 441 pixels per inch.
Design and Dimensions
There aren’t many apparent changes from the S3 at first glance, but there are slight refreshes in the chrome accents, the removable back panel and even the sides of the device. Along the perimeter of the device is a faux aluminum plastic trim, which does give it a high-end look. Both the back and the front have a fine hatch-like pattern. The Galaxy S4 will weigh in at 130g and has reasonable dimensions of 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm. Considering it uses a 5-inch screen very little space is being wasted.
Cellular connectivity – LTE and 3G (HSPA+)
As befitting a flagship in 2013, the Galaxy S4 comes with LTE connectivity, But if your region has no 4G infrastructure, it will play nicely with 850/900/1900/2100 bands for HSPA. The phone supports Cat 3 LTE, so theoretically you will get download speeds of up to 100Mbps and 50Mbps for uploads.
Primary camera – 13 megapixels
Samsung put a lot of focus on the cameras inside the Galaxy S4, just like the Sony Xperia Z the S4 has a 13 megapixel camera packed to the brim with new features: Dual Shot / Dual Recording/ Dual Video Call, Drama Shot, Sound & Shot, 360 Photo, Cinema Photo, Eraser, Night, Best Photo, Best Face, Beauty Face, HDR (High Dynamic Range), Panorama, Sports
As for memory and internal storage, all models will ship with 2GB RAM memory for applications, and there will be a 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants to meet your storage needs. The Galaxy S4 will also come with a microSD card expansion slot with support for a further 64GB of space.
